HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) is a national student organization endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Education Division of ACTE. HOSA’s two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people.
HOSA’s goal is to encourage all health occupations instructors and students to join and be actively involved in the HSE-HOSA Partnership.
HOSA provides a unique program of leadership development, motivation, and recognition exclusively for secondary, postsecondary, adult, and collegiate students enrolled in HSE programs. HOSA is 100% health care!
Since its inception in 1976, HOSA has grown steadily reaching nearly 120,000 members through 47 chartered HOSA State Associations and approximately 3,200 secondary and postsecondary/collegiate chapters in 2009-2010. (www.hosa.org)
Through HOSA our students can apply for scholarships, and also have the opportunity to compete in different areas of the Health Care field. We have a Health Fair in November in San Antonio, where the students have the opportunity to have hands on on different careers, for example if they are interested in EMT, they will interact with EMT’s and have an opportunity to see the ambulance from inside and play with the equipment. They can also, play basketball in wheelchairs so they see disability form the patient’s point of view. We do believe in community service too, we are planning to have a Health fair so we can provide with different free test to the San Benito people. We also have competitions in Health Care related topics. Last year, 3 of our students made it to state, and 1 to Nationals, Diego Huerta.
